What German Level Do You Need for Ausbildung? (A1, B1 or B2?)

A bright classroom — learning German for Ausbildung

If you're aiming for a paid Ausbildung in Germany, the single biggest requirement isn't your school marks — it's your German. Here's exactly what level you need, what each level means in practice, and how long it takes to get there.

The short answer: B1–B2

Most Ausbildung programmes require B1 German as a minimum, and B2 is strongly recommended. A few technical fields may let you start at A2, but you'll be expected to reach B1–B2 quickly once you begin.

Why so high?

Because your vocational school (Berufsschule), your training, and your workplace are all conducted entirely in German. You need to follow lessons, read technical material, and talk to colleagues and customers — from day one.

What each level means for you

A1–A2 (beginner)

Enough to introduce yourself and use simple phrases. Not enough for Ausbildung on its own — but it's the necessary first step everyone starts from.

B1 (independent user) — the usual minimum

You can handle everyday work situations, understand the main points of clear standard speech, and cope with most things that come up during training. Many employers accept B1 to begin.

B2 (upper intermediate) — recommended

You can follow more complex discussions, understand technical documentation, and communicate fluently with colleagues. B2 makes you a far stronger applicant and makes the training itself much easier.

Healthcare and nursing: often B2

For high-responsibility fields like nursing (Pflege), B2 is frequently required, because you're communicating with patients and following medical instructions where mistakes matter.

How long does it take to reach B1–B2?

With consistent, structured lessons, many motivated learners reach B1 in several months and B2 within roughly a year — faster with intensive, small-group study. Self-study alone is usually slower and tends to leave gaps in speaking, which is exactly what employers test.
